Xiegu G90 vs X6100: Which HF Radio Should You Choose?

Radio Guides / Model comparison

Choose the G90 if 20W HF operation with an external power source is your priority. Choose the X6100 if an internal battery, a larger screen and a simpler USB connection matter more to your portable station.

Both include an automatic antenna tuner. Your antenna, power plan and operating style should drive the decision before display size or feature count.

Choose the G90 for a powered HF station

The G90 makes sense for a desk, a vehicle-supported outing or a field station where you already carry a suitable external battery. Its detachable control head gives you flexibility when positioning the radio.

You gain up to 20W output, but you must provide external DC power. There is no internal operating battery. Include the power source and its weight in your portable setup.

Choose the X6100 for self-contained QRP operation

The X6100 combines HF/50MHz operation with an internal rechargeable battery and a 4-inch display. It suits operators who value fewer separate items for a short outing or a compact travel station.

Plan around up to 5W on the internal battery. With suitable external DC power, the specified maximum is 10W for SSB, CW and FM. AM carrier output is lower.

The differences that affect your station

Output power
G90: up to 20W. X6100: up to 10W on external DC or 5W on its internal battery for SSB/CW/FM. These are rated maximums, not a promise of more contacts. Antenna efficiency, propagation and operating technique still matter.
Operating bands
G90 is an HF transceiver. X6100 adds 50MHz capability. Check the permitted bands and modes for your licence and location before transmitting.
Portable power
G90 requires an external DC source. X6100 includes an internal rechargeable battery, although a longer outing may still require external power. Neither a battery capacity figure nor a maximum output rating predicts your real operating time.
Display and controls
G90 uses a compact display and detachable head. X6100 offers a larger 4-inch display. Consider how you will read and adjust the radio outdoors, and where the radio will sit beside your logbook or computer.
Antenna tuning
Both have a built-in automatic tuner. A tuner helps the radio match an antenna within its operating range; it does not make an inefficient antenna efficient or guarantee that every antenna will tune.

FT8: budget for the full connection

On the G90, computer control and audio are separate requirements. A CAT or programming cable alone does not carry the audio needed for FT8. Plan a compatible audio interface and the required radio-side connections.

The X6100 supports USB audio and control through a single USB connection to a computer. You still need suitable software, the correct audio device and CAT settings, accurate computer time and conservative transmit levels.

What to budget for beyond the radio

Allow for a suitable antenna, coax and connectors, a power source where needed, and any computer interface. Check the current product package list rather than assuming that an antenna, battery or power supply is included.

For a first HF station at home, the G90 is a practical choice when you can provide external power and want its 20W capability. For lightweight outings with shorter operating sessions, the X6100 reduces the need for a separate operating battery. For extended field use, compare the complete packed station rather than the radio alone.

Before you decide

Will 20W guarantee better contacts than 5W?

No. Higher available power can help under some conditions, but the antenna, propagation, noise and operating skill also affect results. There is no guaranteed contact distance for either radio.

Does the X6100 need an antenna?

Yes. Use an antenna appropriate for your intended band, with suitable feed line and connectors. The internal tuner is not an antenna.

Where should I get firmware help?

Use our G90 support page for G90 resources. For X6100 version and compatibility questions, contact our support team before installing firmware. Do not interchange files between models.
