Xiegu X6100 vs X6200: Which Portable Radio Fits You?

Radio Guides / Model comparison

Both radios suit portable HF/50MHz operation with an internal battery, automatic antenna tuner and USB audio/control. The X6200 adds an RF direct-sampling platform and a removable battery pack. The X6100 offers a higher specified maximum output on external DC power.

The best choice depends on how you power the station, how long you operate and whether you already own a working X6100 setup. A newer model name alone is not a reason to replace a radio that meets your needs.

Choose the X6100 when its feature set meets your needs

The X6100 combines an internal rechargeable battery, a 4-inch display, a built-in tuner and USB audio/control. It is a useful option for an operator planning compact HF outings and computer-assisted digital operation.

Its specified maximum is 10W on suitable external DC power and 5W on its internal battery for SSB, CW and FM. Compare the current price and package against the accessories your station still needs.

Choose the X6200 for its platform and battery arrangement

The X6200 uses RF direct sampling and a removable battery pack, with an internal tuner and USB audio/control. A removable pack can be useful when planning field power, provided any replacement pack is compatible and available.

Its specified maximum is 8W on suitable external DC power and 5W on battery for SSB, CW and FM. It should not be selected on the assumption that it offers more transmit power than the X6100.

Compare the practical differences

Battery operation
Both are rated up to 5W on battery for SSB/CW/FM. X6100 has an internal rechargeable battery; X6200 uses a removable battery pack. Ask about compatible spare packs before building an operating plan around swapping batteries.
External-power output
X6100: up to 10W. X6200: up to 8W. These SSB/CW/FM ratings require suitable supply conditions; AM carrier output is lower. Maximum output is not a continuous-duty or battery-runtime guarantee.
Receiver platform
The manufacturer specifies RF direct sampling for the X6200. Architecture alone does not establish which radio will receive better in your environment. We are not claiming a measured advantage in sensitivity, selectivity or strong-signal handling without comparable tests.
HF and 50MHz
Both cover HF/50MHz operation. Confirm band permissions for your licence and country. Neither radio replaces a general-purpose VHF/UHF transceiver for local repeater use.
USB digital operation
Both support computer audio and control over USB. This reduces cabling compared with a radio that needs a separate external audio interface, but it does not remove the need to configure the computer and radio correctly.
Antenna matching
Both include an automatic antenna tuner. Take a suitable antenna and feed line; the tuner is not a substitute for an efficient antenna or a guarantee that every load can be matched.

Which one fits your operating style?

Short outings and a small packed station

Either can run from its internal battery. Compare the complete load you carry: radio, antenna, supports, coax, charging equipment and any computer. Choose the controls, battery arrangement and current package that fit your routine.

Longer field sessions

Plan external power or compatible spare batteries around your actual receive/transmit cycle. Digital operation, transmit power, display brightness and temperature affect consumption. Do not assume either radio will last an entire activation from one charge.

Already own an X6100?

Identify a specific limitation before upgrading. The X6200’s platform and removable battery may address your needs, but both remain low-power portable radios. If your main problem is antenna loss or local noise, changing the radio alone may not solve it.

FT8 and computer setup

For either model, check the USB audio device, CAT configuration, time synchronisation and transmit levels in your software. Start conservatively and follow the model’s operating guidance. USB audio/control capability does not establish that the radio can charge through USB.

If you need a cable or a particular software workflow, ask our support team to confirm it for your model and firmware version before ordering.

Before you decide

Is the X6200 more powerful than the X6100?

No. Both are specified up to 5W on battery for SSB/CW/FM. On external DC, the specified maximum is 8W for X6200 and 10W for X6100, under the stated supply conditions.

Can I reuse firmware from the other model?

No. Firmware and update procedures are model-specific. Contact support for help identifying the correct manufacturer resource and compatibility.

Would the G90 be a better fit?

Consider it if you prefer a 20W HF station and are comfortable providing external power. Read G90 vs X6100 to compare the complete station requirements.
